Itinerary

Sail Barbary: Daily Maori Rock Carvings Cruise

  • You're invited to make yourself at home on the lovingly restored classic white sailing yachts. Your skipper and crew will make your sailing trip one to remember aboard the vessel that has proudly entertained locals and visitors to the region for over 30 years.
  • Leave the marina at the beginning on the mighty Waikato River and work your way along the bays of Great Lake Taupo with an informative and interesting short history of the area, it’s volcanic nature and settlement.
  • Sit back and relax in luxury beanbag-style seating on our spacious deck as we round the point and the famous Mine Bay Maori Rock Carvings come into view.
  • Sail Barbary takes you right up close for the perfect shot of the 14-metre high rock art. You’re guaranteed amazing photo opportunities as you experience one of life’s postcard moments on this Maori tour.
  • Soak up the warming sun or go for a swim before you enjoy free refreshments at the Maori Rock Carvings. And since the fresh air and swimming in the lake will make you hungry, you are welcome to B.Y.O (Bring Your Own) prepared food, picnic, snacks and beverages (R18 for beer & wine). Things really couldn’t get more Kiwi!
  • As you depart from the carvings, soak up the sun or roll up your sleeves; you can take the wheel, help hoist the sails or just sit back and enjoy the view.
  • If the wind dies down, Sail Barbary’s quiet, eco-friendly electric engine kicks in. Or if you prefer a real sailing adventure, then come aboard when the wind is up and enjoy sailing without salty sea spray and noisy outboard motors. We’re equipped for all conditions, including awesome warm ponchos.
  • Work your way back across Taupo Bay to the marina, marveling at the picturesque Mountains in one direction and Mount Tauhara watching over Taupo Township in the other.
  • Sail Barbary for an unforgettable trip of a lifetime.

* All Sail Barbary Trips and Itinerary’s are subject to operational conditions.
